How active are you? Unless you get about 30 consistent minutes of cardio exercise per day, then you could be doing your body a huge disservice. Whether it’s running, biking, swimming, or even climbing stairs, you need to incorporate cardio into your routine.
Cardio has many benefits, but the biggest is for your health, specifically the health of your heart. The CDC and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend adults total about 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio exercise to improve your blood cholesterol, triglyceride levels, heart functions, and muscle mass. To increase your cardiovascular endurance, bump that 30 minutes to 60 at least three times per week.
You can also use cardio workouts to maintain a healthy weight. Fat is used as fuel when you exercise, so a cardio workout is the absolute best way to lose weight due to the intensity of cardio exercise. It also makes your body more efficient. Your heart becomes stronger, thus making it easier to pump blood, and reducing the risk of heart disease. Cardio workouts don’t only reduce the risk for heart disease, they also drop your chances of type 2 diabetes and some cancers such as colon cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and multiple myeloma cancer.
Strengthening your cardiovascular endurance also does wonders for your mental health as well. Exercise releases endorphins which elevate your mood, and help combat anxiety, stress, and depression.
Use cardio as a way to improve your physical and mental health. Making exercise part of your life, and open your mind and body to the wonderful changes it can bring to your life!
